New parents won't understand. They think they need EVERYTHING in the diaper bag: medicine, toys, blankets, clothing, hand sanitizer, formula, and on and on. It gets to the point where they leave out the diapers and put them in another bag.
Here's an easy way to avoid all of that unnecessary extra weight. Newbies, take note. Otherwise you're going to end up doing what we did our first vacation in a mini-van; dropped the seats in the back and packed half the house.
First off, get rid of the diaper bag. I wanted to mod a briefcase for that hipster on the go, but the idea was veto'd.
Get a satchel. Something cool, like in the Hangover:

It doesn't have to be that fancy. Kay picked up a cheap camera bag at a thrift shop (what, what). for five bucks. It's the one I'll be using to show you how to streamline.
For sizing, I threw a diet coke can (gotta watch those thunder thighs!) next to the bag, to show you how large it is.

We have three boys, only one potty trained, so we have to make sure we have enough. Trust me, this is a diaper bag for two kids and proves you don't need to bring a lot (and I'll provide a list of everything at the end).
At the top left grid we have, left to right, travel bottles of: liquid detergent, yellow dish soap, hand sanitizer, butt cream, and a mini-pump bottle of disinfectant.

To prove I fit all of this into the bag, I did it step by step. I think I forgot something....hurm. It happens. You get parent brain and forget to put in the (expletive deleted) whatever. Or forget to bring the gallon of frozen breast milk your wife spent a month producing (I'm sorry!). Next step is:
A grey floral "Udder Cover" followed by an orange feminine knapkin (for emergencies) and clear plastic diaper bags. Then on the right we have a change pad. Then, we have diapers, of course.
And because even Rocky had a montage:
AND OF COURSE I FORGOT A CHANGE OF CLOTHES AND DIAPER WIPES IN THE LIST!
You can also see there is more than enough room to make up for mistakes, and even add more stuff like a bottle and a powdered formula dispenser (pictured to the left).
Below, we see the diaper bag is more stylish than I am.

Change of clothes
A (one) bottle
Dry formula dispenser.
